MHS Unplugged

Students Host First In-Person Concert in 18 Months

For the first time since February 2020, Miss Hall’s hosted a live, in-person concert! Held the Friday night of Family Weekend, MHS Unplugged featured two socially distanced shows, one for students and families and a second version for students, who brought amazing energy to the Klein Arts Center.

The Vocal Ensemble opened the show by singing “Give Us Hope,” by James Papoulis, followed by a bouncy rendition of “Count on Me,” by Bruno Mars, featuring audience participation! Director of Music and Choral Director Debbie Duff P’06 led the Ensemble, which was accompanied by Instrumental Music Instructor Amy Renak on piano.

The ensemble features Jena Alam ’23, Maggie Bullock ’22, Molly Casey ’24, Cici Chen ’23, Kitty Chen ’24, Shirley Dong ’23, Willa Dowling-Paul ’25, Alice Ho ’23, Truc Hoang ’22, Malina Jackson ’23, Julianna Jia ’22, Ivy Kay ’25, Sunny Liang ’23, Emily Meng ’23, Kathleen Nguyen ’22, Thi Nguyen ’22, Kelly Pham ’22, Ella Tawes ’24, Maddie Tillem ’24, Yiyi Xue ’24, Christina Zheng ’22, Ivy Zhou ’22, Nico Zhou ’23, and Joana Zimmermann ’24.

Shirley Dong ’23 and Belle He ’23, directed by Ms. Duff and accompanied by Fei Yang ’22 on keyboards, and Instrumental Music Teacher Jeffrey Howard on guitar, then delivered a powerful version of Katy Perry’s “Rise,” and Anna Ho ’22 sang “Top of the World” (her mother’s favorite song!) by Karen and Richard Carpenter. Anna was accompanied by Samantha Taxter ’22 on violin, Ms. Duff on piano, and Mr. Howard on guitar.

Grace Notes, the School’s a cappella singing group, closed the evening with the year’s first performance of “Harmony,” their signature song, and “Try everything,” from the movie Zootopia. The group is led by co-Head’s Anna Ho ’22 and Keely O’Gorman ’22 and features Shirley Dong ’23, Honey Fields ’24, Belle He ’23, Iva Knezevic ’24, Milie Madourie ’22, Fernanda Morais Laroca ’23, Jo Swallie ’22, and Yolanda Zhang ’23.

It was wonderful to be back together and enjoying the sounds of real, live, in-person music from our talented students!
