Miss Hall’s Master Classes

One of the best parts of Reunion 2021 was a set of master classes led by beloved Miss Hall’s faculty, many of whom invited in students to provide a window into MHS classrooms today.

In the lead-up to this year’s Come One, Come All Reunion, we launched a new series of virtual master classes to which all MHS alums, families, and friends were invited. These popular sessions featured our best-in-class faculty and spotlighted some of our amazing students, pulling back the curtain on the Miss Hall's experience.

The master class series is on hiatus while we prepare for reunion, but our next iteration is already in the works. We will update you as soon as we have details!

Dean of Equity & Inclusion Paula Lima Jones, DE&I Coordinator Kim Boland '94, and Math Teacher Adrienne Lazes '05 presented on the topic of gender diversity and inclusion. The conversation centered on trends around gender diversity at MHS and beyond, a gender 101 review, and stories of their own gender identity journeys.

English Teacher Rebecca Cook-Dubin provided MHS alums, family, and friends a window into our advanced-level Hallmark Humanities Seminar. A full-year course for juniors and seniors that deepens understanding of the cross-sections among history, literature, other areas of the humanities, and even STEM fields, Hallmark Humanities explores passion projects of each student’s choosing. Participants had the opportunity to contribute to the students’ final project phase by asking questions and helping them fine-tune their product for presentation to the entire MHS community.

Elizabeth Gatchell Klein Expressive Arts Chair Ellie Kreischer introduced her course on the basic skills of garment construction and textile design and explored the culture of making that has re-emerged at Miss Hall’s. Ellie shared how Garment and Textile Design, offered now for the seventh year, has inspired students to embark on a variety of pathways into creative fields.

Participants also met recent graduate Hannah Holt ’21, who in the spring of her senior year at MHS started her own silk-screening enterprise that is now thriving on her college campus. They also met Emily Gerstein ’22 and Emily Lombardi ’22, the leaders of Hatch, a new MHS club focused on supporting creativity and entrepreneurship.

Science Department Chair Donna Daigle, now in her 20th year at MHS, led a master class on the collective power of women in creating far-reaching demographic shifts within society. Using Brazil as a case study, the class examined demographic transition, fertility rates, and reproductive health, and learned what can happen when women support women to affect change. Students in the prototype-building phase of their semester projects for the course also presented their topics.
