Making waves
Erica Morales-Armstrong ’20 earns recognition for her evocative photograph
“Waves,” by Erica Morales-Armstrong ’20, received a Gold Key in photography in the 2019 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, sponsored by The Boston Globe and presented by the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts.
Erica took “Waves” while visiting Grindavíkurbær, Iceland, with Miss Hall’s students on the Thanksgiving Break trip. About the inspiration for the award-winning photo, Erica says:
“It was a gorgeous beach, and there was a place where we could stand along the edge. We took pictures for a while, and I waited until the waves hit against the rocks. I took a bunch, but this photo is my favorite because I liked the contrast between the pure light and pure dark. I took it in color, but because it was so cloudy that day, there is not much color in it at all. It was white and black and very monotone and pretty."
“I take a lot of photos on an everyday basis," Erica adds. "I like being able to capture moments and I enjoy the freedom of photography. My father is an architect, and my grandmother does a lot of painting and photography, so it has always been in my home and around me.”
