Latest issue of literary journal goes live!
Girls Right the World features work by young, female-identified writers and artists from around the globe
The ongoing coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic coudn't keep the intrepid editors of Girls Right the World from publishing their groundbreaking literary journal.
Issue 4 went live on Thursday, May 14, and features writing and art by forty-three girls. This issue was edited by Muhiim Ali ’21, Hazel Grallert ’21, Jiho Shin ’21, and Paige Wright ’21, with assistance from their advisor, English Teacher Emily Pulfer-Terino ’97.
Published annually, Girls Right the World is an international, online literary and art journal that features work by young, female-identified writers and artists from around the globe. This year's edition received more than 300 submissions from writers and artists in 29 states and 15 countries.
The journal, which was created in 2016 by MHS students and Ms. Pulfer-Terino, values and promotes diversity of culture and expression. It is also a Horizons site, providing juniors and seniors with opportunities to develop as professional editors and to further advancing their skills in collaboration, critical thinking, keen reading, analytics, promotion, and website development.
Their first issue, published in April 2017, featured poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction. The publication has been featured in media, in the Berkshires and beyond, in sources such as The Berkshire Eagle, WAMC Northeast Public Radio, and the weekly radio program 51%. Girls Right the World also continues to build partnerships with cultural institutions such as The Mount, which is the former Berkshire home of the author Edith Wharton, and more, advocating for a dynamic and ever-expanding group of contributors and engaging a burgeoning global readership. Issue 3, in 2019, debuted with a reading at The Mount.
"This has been a particularly rewarding challenging issue to work on in that, for several months now, we have been meeting frequently in person to work through innumerable incredible submissions," Ms. Pulfer-Terino noted in launch of Issue 4. "More recently, though, we’ve wrapped up and are launching this issue remotely, in the midst of a global pandemic. It’s my honor to celebrate the work of this persevering editorial dream team! Moreover, I am thrilled and grateful to share and celebrate wonderful work from our contributors worldwide!"
