Celebrating Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month

The MHS Diversity Coalition led a community-wide celebration of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage month from September 15 through October 15, 2020.

DivCoThe Diversity Coalition includes the leaders of three Essential Coalitions that work to foster inclusion and courageous conversations at MHS. members shared call-to-action emails and informational emails with insights into different aspects of Hispanic/Latinx culture. They also created a Spotify playlist!

During a September Community Meeting, members of the Hispanic/Latinx community at Miss Hall’s spoke about their heritage and what the month means to them.

Gabriela Nicholson ’21 — Colombia

“To me, this month is celebrating my heritage, where I come from, the music, and my family.”

Viola Quiles ’23 — Puerto Rico

“This month is important to me because it is a time to celebrate and share our culture with the community.”

Bethania Robertson ’21 — Brazil

“This month is important to me because it is a way to connect with that part of myself, and to learn and engage in not only my background, but others’ backgrounds as well.”

Wendy Weeks ’21 — Colombia

“Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month is important to me, because it allows me to celebrate my heritage.”

Welmerly Maria ’24 — Dominican Republic

“Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month means a lot to me in so many different ways. First of all, I’m able to connect with my family members through learning the family history, the language, the clothing, the food, the different styles of dance, and so much more. I’m also able to discover who I am, who I can become due to culture, who I want to be, and how strong I want to be included in the culture.”
