Sarah Hitchcock Yerkes ’36 turns the world to art
Centenarian designer-turned-landscape-architect-turned-sculptor-turned-poet Sarah Hitchcock Yerkes ’36 embodies the best of Miss Hall’s.
Sidestepping Sarah Lawrence after graduation from Miss Hall’s, Sarah instead enrolled at the Museum School at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She studied architectural design at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, and a few years later, founded a successful landscape design firm. In her 60’s, she attended the Corcoran School of Art, where she began transforming wood, aluminum, stone, and piping into amazing sculptures.
Sarah recently turned her formidable energy to poetry. Her first book of poems, Days of Blue and Flame, was published last year by Passager Books. Her willingness to dream, to imagine possibility, and to contribute boldly and creatively to the common good is a beautiful testament to a purposeful life.
