NATIONAL MERIT COMMENDED STUDENTS

Five MHS seniors — Leora Cook-Dubin, Hanna Heaton Wellenstein, Cora Ma, Ella Tawes, and Carrie Zhou — have been named Commended Students in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The designation means they placed among the top 34,000 of the more than 1.3 million students who entered the 2024 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards by taking the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

In addition to their academic achievements, all five students are active members of the MHS community.

Leora is a Diversity Coalition tri-Head and co-Head of the MHS Jewish Affinity Group. A member of the MHS ski team, she served as the co-Head of Spectrum during the 2022-23 school year. A talented artist, Leora’s work is included in the banners displayed on the front of the MHS Main Building.

Hanna is Vice President of the School, and she Chairs the School’s Judicial Committee. She is a captain of the varsity soccer team and a member of the varsity lacrosse team. Hanna served as co-Head of the Athletics Association during the 2022-23 school year and has performed with the MHS Jazz Band.

Cora is the School Secretary and a member of the varsity tennis team and the MHS Chamber Ensemble, playing the violin. She was previously a Student Council Representative for the Class of 2024, and she received the Passionate Commitment to Academics Award at the May 2023 Underclass Awards Ceremony.

Ella is the Senior Class Vice President and a member of the varsity soccer team. A talented vocalist, she performs with the MHS Rock Band and has presented solo and duet vocal performances. A member of the MHS Theater Ensemble, Ella performed in the recent MHS musicals, Mary Poppins and Once Upon a Mattress.

Carrie is co-Head of the MHS Economy Club, and she served as a Stage Manager for the Theater Ensemble production of Sense and Sensibility and on the Technical Theater Crew for productions of The Misanthrope and Mary Poppins. Also a talented artist, Carrie’s art graced the cover of the Spring 2022 MHS Magazine.
